Privacy

The short version

• We don’t use advertising or tracking cookies, and we never sell or share data for advertising.
• We count visits in a way that can’t identify you or follow you around the internet.
• If you send a question, please don’t include your name or anything personal. Questions are checked before they appear on the site.

What we collect, and why

We collect only what we need to run the site and make better explanations. Our legal reason for this is our legitimate interest in running and improving Now It Clicks.

Visits

When you visit, we record the page, the site that sent you (for example Google or YouTube), your rough country (worked out from your connection, which we don’t store), whether you’re on a phone, tablet or computer, and your browser. We also count how far people read and which buttons they use, like “Make it click” or “Did it click?”.

To count visitors without cookies, we make a code from a secret that changes every day plus your connection and browser. The code can’t be turned back into who you are, and each day’s secret is deleted, so visits on different days can’t be linked. If your browser sends a “Do Not Track” or “Global Privacy Control” signal, we don’t count your visit at all.

Questions, votes and “Did it click?”

We keep the words of any question you send, and your votes and answers. So that nobody can vote twice, your browser keeps a random code in its storage for this site (not a cookie). We only store a scrambled version of it. You can delete it at any time by clearing this site’s data in your browser.

The editor’s sign-in

The Studio, where explanations are written, uses one cookie to keep the editor signed in. Readers never get this cookie.

Who can see it

Only the person who runs Now It Clicks. The site is hosted by Cloudflare, which handles every request to deliver the site safely (Cloudflare’s privacy policy). We don’t sell data or share it with anyone else.

How long we keep it

• Visit statistics: about 13 months, then deleted.
• Questions: until they’re answered or removed. Votes and “Did it click?” answers are kept while the question or explanation is on the site.

Children

Now It Clicks is written for curious people of any age, including children. We collect as little as possible, never ask for names, ages or contact details, and never show personal information on the site. Grown-ups: if you think a child has put something personal in a question, get in touch and we’ll delete it.

Your rights

You can ask what we hold about you, or ask us to delete it, by contacting hello@nowitclicks.co.uk. Because we don’t store names or email addresses, we may need the exact wording of a question to find it. If you’re unhappy with how we handle data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office.

Changes

If anything here changes, we’ll update this page and the date at the top.
